When people can get their needs met by local businesses, the region thrives. Some things are better done at a larger scale, but if basic needs are met by far away entities, distant disruptions can be locally and broadly catastrophic. Purchasing practices and policies that help grow local economies can increase the resiliency and health of a region.

Instead of: depending on distant production and vulnerable supply chains to meet our basic needs, while at the same time under-employing local people and resources.
